Hop & Brew School®: Great Taste of the Midwest 2023
Join Yakima Chief Hops for the third annual Great Taste of the Midwest Hop & Brew School Satellite Event on Friday, August 11, 2023, from 10 am to 1:30 pm. We are excited to host this event at Delta Beer Lab in Madison, WI, with our friends from Omega Yeast and Briess Malt. We will be covering topics including:
• COA Sensory Training, presented by Yakima Chief Hops. This interactive sensory training focuses on a single lot of hops – starting with analytical explanations on a COA, sharing sensory standards for oil compounds, and concluding with a beer tasting from the same lot of hops. This presentation will help demystify your hop COAs and provide you with the tools to select the best lots for your brewery.
• Outlook Hazy or Bright – Let Your Yeast Decide”, presented by Omega Yeast. This session will cover Omega’s recent investigations into yeast-dependent haze have uncovered that specific brewing yeast strains promote haze formation in heavily dry-hopped beer styles. Omega termed these yeast “haze positive” and found that the timing of dry hop additions is another key factor in producing this stable haze. This session will walk through this research and share some fun takeaways for brewers looking for new yeast to make Hazy (or not hazy) IPAs.
• Malting 102, presented by Briess Malting. This session will dive deeply into flavor formation created through kilning and roasting. This session will include malt sensory evaluation techniques, including the Hot Steep Method.
Space is limited, so make sure to register before spots sell out. Lunch will be provided, beer will be available, and take-home resources will be included.
